NEW MEDIA & MORE looks at the news
In Dallas, Commercial Radio Without Commercials
By ANDREW ADAM NEWMAN | NEW YORK TIMES April 23, 2007
Facing increasing competition from satellite radio and iPods, Clear Channel Communications is trying something radically different at a commercial radio station in Texas: getting rid of the commercials. Instead, advertisers sponsor an hour of programming, during which a D.J. will promote its product conversationally in what the company calls integration. For example, the D.J. will identify Southwest Airlines, one of the station’s first advertisers, as the sponsor at the beginning of the program...

LOS ANGELES - Clear Channel Communications Inc. launched on Monday a free mobile program that enables listeners to text-message radio stations from their cell phones to make song requests, get real-time traffic reports and access other information.

Some ads will not work online
Guests at Omni luxury hotels found small scented stickers on the front pages of their free copies of USA Today beginning April 2, 2007. A blackberry aroma tantalized guests to start the day at their hotels with a cup of Starbucks coffee “paired with a fresh muffin.” And newspapers are not the only medium to test sensory marketing. Amazon to start selling digital music
By Joshua Chaffin and Aline van Duyn in New York | FT.com | May 17 2007 00:46
Amazon moved to shake up the online music business on Wednesday by setting up a direct rival to Apple... Amazon said its decision to abandon so-called digital rights management software and instead sell tracks in the MP3 format would allow consumers easily to transfer music among a variety of devices – from iPods to personal computers and compact discs. ...“Our MP3-only strategy means all the music that customers buy on Amazon is always DRM-free and plays on any device,” said Jeff Bezos, chief executive of Amazon.

May 25, 2007 | DAILY MAIL.co.uk
In the race for ever thinner displays for TVs, cell phones and other gadgets, Sony may have developed one to beat them all - a razor-thin display that bends like paper while showing full-colour video. Sony Corporation posted video of the new 2.5 inch display on its' web page.

Google launches open-source technology for creating offline web applications.
Google Gears will enable its own applications to be used without an internet connection, launched from a computer’s hard drive, and files created can be stored and accessed on that drive. Google Reader, a news reader, will be offline-enabled from today and other applications would be expected to follow. ...Google says Gears will work with all main browsers on all main platforms – Windows, Mac and Linux. But while it says the Firefox and Opera browsers welcome Gears, it made no mention of Microsoft or its Internet Explorer web browser....
