Intel to Unveil Chips for Improving Video Quality on the Web
By JOHN MARKOFFhttp://www.nytimes.com/
Published: November 12, 2007 SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 — Intel plans to announce a family of microprocessor chips on Monday that it says will speed the availability of high-definition video via the Internet.
Sean Maloney, Intel’s chief sales and marketing officer, said last week that the chips’ increased computing power would begin the transformation of today’s stuttering and blurry videos, the staple of YouTube and other video streaming sites, into high-resolution, full-screen quality that will begin to compete with the living room HDTV.
"It’s biggest impact is high-definition video," he said. "It will be highly addictive."

Kindle sells out in 5.5 hours
Posted Nov 21st 2007 1:01PM by Nilay Patel |
Engadget.com Amazon isn't disclosing how many Kindles it actually had ready to go, but apparently the idea of a tiny e-book reader with free EV-DO and the visual flair of an Apple IIc hit home for quite a few people, because they sold out in just five and a half hours. Amazon's site says they'll be back in stock on the 29th, but availability is first-come, first-served, so it looks like you'll have to act fast if you want to get one before gift-giving time sets in.
The details from the story in
Newsweek:

Google enters mobile phone market
Monday November 5, 6:06 pm ET | By Eric Auchard and Sinead Carew | Reuters SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK - Google Inc said on Monday it would offer a software system to make the Internet work as smoothly on mobile phones as it does on computers, seeking to spur change in a tightly controlled industry.
In its long-rumored entry into the mobile phone market, the world's leading Internet company said it would start next week by allowing independent designers to tinker with its software, known as "Android." Google-based phones are due to appear in the latter half of next year. ... "We're hoping thousands of different mobile phones will be powered by Android," Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt told reporters on a conference call following the announcement.
Poll finds nearly 80 percent of U.S. adults go online
Mon Nov 5, 2007 8:35pm EST NEW YORK (Reuters) - Do you find yourself going online more and more? You're not alone.
Four out of five U.S. adults go online now, according to a new Harris Poll.
The survey, which polled 2,062 adults in July and October, found that 79 percent of adults -- about 178 million -- go online, spending an average 11 hours a week on the Internet.
"We're up to almost 80 of adults who now are online, or are somehow gaining access to the Internet. That's a pretty impressive figure," said Regina Corso, director of the Harris Poll.
The results reflect a steady rise since 2000, when 57 percent of adults polled said they went online. In 2006, the number was 77 percent.
When Harris Interactive, a market research firm, first began tracking online use among adults in 1995, the group found that only nine percent of the population -- or 17.5 million -- said they went online.

The focus of this issue of NEW MEDIA is: Websites that meet
W3C standards. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
strongly prefers compliant websites. Some code used in Microsoft's FrontPage has been deprecated by the W3C, whose mission is: "To lead the World Wide
Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that
ensure long-term growth for the Web."
Most web pages are created with too much embedded source code. This trend is in the process of being reversed by the W3C because such design practices slow down the web and prevent sites from being accessible to handicapped (differently-abled) internauts. The W3C,
Google, the U.S. Government, and other important Internet players want
sites to be accessible.
DAY Communications is committed to designing sites that comply with W3C
standards. As the web evolves and the need to upgrade or update your
website becomes essential, please contact us for assistance with a
standards-compliant design.
The Legends Apartments is an example of website recently redesigned by DAY that has earned the W3C
validation "congratulations icons." Its Rental Application pdf form, created by DAY in Acrobat 8, is interactive to facilitate this process for the staff. The site also has a style sheet to display a special page for handheld devices
that is accessed from an invisible link on the Welcome Page.
At the present, FastZone is a little short of total W3C compliance. FastZone
is a php site designed by web software enthusiasts from around the world
who created and currently manage "e107." Its code is continually improved.
A comparison of content management sites like e107 is detailed on
CMS Matrix.org.
The complexity of a website that offers download and upload
capabilities, a forum, a calendar, and many other interactive features
is immense. Finding one that suits your organization's specific goals
is less than half the battle-- You will still need a web designer to customize it
for you. Contact us!
NEW MEDIA & MORE has reported on many media developments over the past
year, and we look forward to keeping you apprised about NEW MEDIA & MORE
in 2008.
Thank you for keeping DAY in mind for graphic design, web design and
advertising needs.
